Electric fireplace repair is the diagnosis and fix of the components inside a plug-in or hardwired electric fireplace or insert: the heating element, the blower fan, the flame-effect lights and rotating motor, the thermostat and the remote or touch controls. If your electric fireplace has stopped heating, the flames have gone dark, the fan has become loud, or the remote no longer responds, this is the service you need.
This page is strictly about electric units. If your fireplace burns gas and has a pilot, burner or valve, the work is different and is covered on our Gas Fireplace Repair page; an electric fireplace has no fuel, no flame and no combustion, which is exactly why its problems and its safety rules are different. Electric units can be repaired with the power disconnected, and most faults trace to a single replaceable part rather than a whole appliance.

How It Works
How we repair an electric fireplace
Power off, then diagnose
We unplug the unit or switch off its circuit before touching anything. We then test the outlet and cord, the power switch, the thermal cut-off, the heating element, the blower, the flame motor and LEDs, and the control board and remote receiver, one stage at a time, so we find the actual failed part rather than guessing.
Repair or replace the part
Most failures are one component: a dead heater element, a seized blower, a burnt-out flame motor or LED strip, a failed thermal fuse or a control board that has stopped receiving the remote. We source the correct manufacturer or compatible part for your model and install it, cleaning dust out of the heater housing and fan while we are in there.
Test, report and advise
We run the unit through every mode, confirm heat output, fan speed, flame effect and remote response, and check the cord and outlet for heat. You get a plain-language summary of what failed, what we replaced, and whether anything else is on its way out.

Common electric fireplace repairs
- Heater element or thermal cut-off replacement — when the flames work but the unit gives little or no heat, or the heat cuts out after a short run.
- Blower fan repair or replacement — when the unit is noisy, the airflow is weak, or the fan does not spin at all; often the motor is worn or packed with dust and pet hair.
- Flame-effect LED or motor replacement — when the flame picture is dark, stuck, dim on one side or flickers unevenly; applies to both older bulb-and-spinner units and modern LED designs.
- Control board, switch or remote receiver repair — when buttons, the remote or the app stop controlling the unit, or it turns itself on and off.
- Cord, plug and connection repair — when the cord is damaged, the plug discolors, or the connections inside a built-in insert have loosened.

Timing & Safety
When repair is necessary, and when replacement makes more sense
Repair is usually the right call when the unit is a quality built-in or insert, the fault is a single part, and parts are still available for your model. A blower, heater element, flame motor or remote receiver is a straightforward swap that restores the fireplace for years.
- Repair now: any smell of hot plastic, a warm plug or outlet, a breaker that trips, or a cord that is frayed. Stop using the unit until it is looked at.
- Repair when convenient: a dim or frozen flame effect, a noisy fan or an unresponsive remote. These are annoying but not unsafe with the unit switched off.
- Consider replacement: when several parts have failed together, the control board is obsolete and no longer made, or the unit is an inexpensive freestanding model where the part costs approach the price of a new one. We will say so plainly rather than sell you a repair that does not make sense.

Safety considerations
Electric fireplaces carry no combustion risk, but they are high-draw heating appliances and the usual electrical rules apply.
- Always unplug the unit, or switch off its breaker for a hardwired insert, before opening any panel, vacuuming the heater or checking a fan. Never probe a live unit.
- Do not run an electric fireplace on an extension cord or power strip; the heater draws too much current for them.
- If the plug, cord or outlet is warm, discolored or smells, stop using the unit. That is a connection problem, not a fireplace problem, and a licensed electrician may be needed for the outlet itself.
- Keep the heater outlet clear of drapes, furniture and anything that blocks airflow; a blocked heater overheats and trips its thermal cut-off.
- Leave board-level and heater-element work to a qualified technician. The heater sits on mains voltage and the thermal cut-off exists to protect the unit; bypassing it is never a fix.
Seattle & Puget Sound conditions
Seattle homes use electric fireplaces heavily from October through April, and that long run season is hard on blowers and heater elements. Our damp winters also mean units in basements, daylight-basement family rooms and older homes near Puget Sound can draw moist air through the heater, which lets dust cake onto the fan and element faster than in a dry climate. Homes with older wiring in Seattle, Tacoma and Everett neighborhoods sometimes share the fireplace circuit with other loads, which is a common cause of nuisance breaker trips that look like a fireplace fault. We check for that before replacing anything.

Electric Fireplace Repair FAQ
My electric fireplace shows flames but no heat. Is that a simple fix?
Usually, yes. The flame effect and the heater are separate systems, so flames without heat almost always points to the heater element, the thermal cut-off or the heater switch, not the whole unit. We confirm which one has failed and replace that part.
Can you repair the remote for my electric fireplace?
Often the remote itself is fine and the receiver on the control board has failed, or the unit has lost pairing. We test both. If the remote is dead, a manufacturer or compatible replacement is usually available; if the receiver has failed, the board or receiver module is replaced.
Why does my electric fireplace keep shutting off?
Most often the thermal cut-off is tripping because airflow through the heater is blocked by dust or a failing blower, or the thermostat is reaching its set point and cycling normally. Less often it is a breaker or control board issue. We diagnose the cause rather than just resetting it.
Is it worth repairing an older electric fireplace?
For a built-in or quality insert, yes in most cases, because the parts that fail are inexpensive relative to replacing a built-in. For a low-cost freestanding unit with multiple failures or an obsolete board, replacement can be the better use of money, and we will tell you which applies.
Do you work on electric fireplace inserts that are built into a wall or old masonry fireplace?
Yes. Built-in and insert units usually have to be pulled forward or removed to reach the heater and board, and hardwired units need the circuit switched off first. We handle both and reinstall the unit when the repair is done.
Do you repair gas fireplaces too?
Yes, but that is a separate service with different safety steps. Pilot, burner, valve and ignition problems are covered on our Gas Fireplace Repair page. This page is only for electric units, which have no fuel or flame.
